Construction of a maternity block for the Prime Care Health Center

Prime Care Health Centre is the brain child of Prime Initiatives. The organization is managing the health facility to help residents of Banda District to get access to health care services. The construction of the health facility was started in 2018 with an initial funding from the Netherlands Albert Schweitzer Foundation (NASF). The community members also supported the project through communal labour to provide skilled and unskilled labour.

The clinic has started operations and is being used to provide maternal and child health services. However, we are seeking funding from donors to expand the clinic so that more health care services can be provided. We have started the construction of a maternity block so that pregnant women can deliver their babies at the health facility.

Construction of Out Patients department (OPD) for Prime Care Health center (PCHC)

Prime Initiatives is currently constructing an OPD for the PCHC. The project received some funding support from The Pollination Project (TPP) and donations from some volunteers of the organization. However, we still need funding support to enable us complete the project.

Construction of   a clinic at Kabrono in the Banda District

We got  an initial funding from the Netherlands Albert Schweitzer Foundation (NASF) to construct a clinic in Kabrono community which is located in the Banda District. The community is located at the center of 6 other adjoining communities. Health care in the district is in a deplorable state because of the absence or lack of health facilities in these communities. The residents do not have access to healthcare services. The district does not have a district hospital and it has no single medical doctor.

The community members are supporting the construction of the clinic through communal labours. There was no labour cost attached to the construction of the clinic because the community members supported in all the activities. The community members supported in clearing the land for the construction, trench excavation, moulding of blocks, laying of blocks, fetching of water for the construction, roofing and plastering.

The clinic when completed will provide

  • Maternal and Child health services
  • Family planning services
  • Health promotion and preventive, services.
  • General clinical services
  • Basic laboratory services
  • Normal deliveries
  • Reproductive and child health Services (RCH)
  • Antenatal care, postnatal care
  • Prevention of Mother to child Transmission care (PMTCT)
  • Expanded Programme on Immunization
  • Dispensary services
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Primary health care services
  • Non-invasive services

Extension of electricity to Kabrono community clinic

We have been able to collaborate effectively with the communities and the local government agency which is the Banda District Assembly. As part of the District Assembly’s contribution to our project; the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the district supported us with 5 electricity poles to extend electricity to the clinic which we have constructed or built in Banda Kabrono.  The Electricity Company of Ghana also supported us with the technical men and materials to undertake the electricity extension to the project site. We covered a distance of about 200 meters. The supply of electricity to the project site will support in the use of electric medical equipment and the provision of lighting system to the project site. The clinic will contribute greatly to healthcare delivery in the Banda district.

Supply of furniture to the Kabrono community clinic

With funding from the Purley Overseas Trust (POST) in the United Kingdom, we have been able to procure wooden benches and offices tables for the clinic in Kabrono. The wooden benches will be used by the patients and clients who visit the clinic for healthcare whilst the nurses will use the benches in the office tables in the consulting room and child welfare sessions.

My Choice, My Life Project

The MCML project is a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project which is being implemented by Prime Initiatives. The project was started in September 2017 after a baseline was conducted. The project is being implemented in the Banda District of Ghana. The target group or population of the project is young people between the ages of 10 to 24 years.

The project also targets parents, guardians, religious leaders and traditional leaders. Through this project, we have formed the “Smart Teens” clubs in 17 basic schools of the Banda District. We have also formed young people’s clubs in 10 communities. The objectives of the project are to provide Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) to young people, to provide sexual and reproductive health services to young people and to empower young people to exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights.

The project intends to reach about 7,914 young people directly with sexual and reproductive health services and information. The project has not received funding from any donor. It is being financed with the voluntary contributions of the staffs and volunteers of Prime Initiatives.
